Control Your Reactions and Increase Your Luck

We have the power to control our reactions to events, and in doing so increase our luck.

Neville says,  "Your reactions, whether positive or negative, are creative of future circumstances".

As I understand it, what this means is, whenever something happens, it is our reactions to the event, that is creating our future.

In other words, the way we react, is the way we feel, and what we are feeling is what we are vibrating and attracting or creating more of.

Furthermore, we can control our reactions, if we take a moment to remember that each and every event doesn't mean anything in particular, it only means what we are imagining and believing that it means.

I had an experience that reminded me of how true this is.

Last summer, Sweetie and I set out on a 125 mile road trip to see Billy Joe Shaver in concert.

We left a little early so we would have plenty of time to get to the venue, find parking, and perhaps enjoy a meal before the show.

About an hour into the trip the air conditioner suddenly stopped working and the engine started overheating in Sweetie's auto. (Not good when the temperature is about 90 degrees and you're still about 70 miles from your destination.)

Luckily, within minutes we saw a rest area and pulled in with smoke coming from under the hood.

Now our first reactions could have been really negative.
  • Fear that we were stranded
  • How would we get it fixed?
  • Was it even fixable?
  • How much would it cost to fix?
  • Were we going to miss our concert?
Instead, we chose to react positively with thoughts like:
  • We were lucky there was a rest area so close
  • Wonder how close the nearest garage and tow truck service is?
  • I wonder if the towing service takes AAA.
  • It's good we left early, we could still make the concert.
While Sweetie was looking under the hood, I went into the rest area and asked where the nearest town was.  Within minutes I had contacted a garage with a tow truck and they were on their way to pick us up.

Even though the driver informed us they no longer took AAA, I decided not to worry, I informed Sweetie I had some sort of road service on my auto insurance that covered towing bills. I was just happy we were being towed to the garage to get our auto fixed.

Once there, they informed us it was just a hose, they could fix it and have us back on the road soon. The owner told us we were lucky we called when we did because they were just getting ready to lock up and go home.
Enjoying a cool beverage while waiting.

In less than 45 minutes from the time it happened we were back on the highway headed to our show.  The bill was $160 ($80 for the tow and $80 for the repair job), and cash only, but once again we chose to be happy that we just happened to have enough cash.

We arrived in time to still have a good BBQ dinner, the concert was really fun, and I even got to meet Billy Joe Shaver afterwards.

All the way home late that night we kept counting our blessings.  We were so lucky it happened where it did and when it did.

Some people might say, if you were really lucky, it wouldn't have happened at all, and it cost you $160.

The truth is, things happen all around us every day and as I said, I believe how we react is sowing the seeds for how things turn out.

My auto insurance reimbursed the $80 for the tow bill, and a few months later Sweetie's insurance said the whole incident was covered and sent him a check for $160, so we actually came out $80 ahead. How's that for lucky?

So, the next time some "unlucky" event happens, control your reactions. Look for something to feel good about in the event. Even if it doesn't change the current situation, you will be sowing the seeds for good stuff to come your way and before you know it, you'll be feeling lucky too.

Until next time, here's to your lucky life!
